Using Arduino Servo Shields instead of Motor shield

Can you use the Arduino Servo Shield in place of the motor shield with a few alterations? Alternatively, when stacking the motor shield in order to gain more servo ports, how do we differentiate the new servo pin numbers to MATLAB?
