How to use Simulink.M​odelRefere​nce.protec​t

Hello,

I have created a protected model and want it to work with as many versions of Matlab/Simulink as possible. Is it possible to protect a model that is forward compatiable i.e. my model is design in 2016B but it would also work in 2017B or 2018B. Just trying to avoid having to keep making new models as matlab releases new software. I saw the following command "Simulink.ModelReference.protect" but i can't access the part model to put it in a blank model.
