Where can I find how to code Finite element

Does anyone know how to set up matlab code to run finite element equations. I am guessing it is a loop program where it does all the spatial calculations for each element then loops to the next time step? How do you define each element and ensure that each element is stored so that a little animation can be ran and color coded?
