Gfortran supported compilers on OSX

Dear all, I wonder if there is a "standard" way to get gfortran supported compilers for MAC. Matlab supports gfortran 4.3.x which is a rather old version (4.8 is already available). This is not an issue for Linux, since this version is available in almost all repositories. Under MAC OSX (I am working with Lion) it seems that there is no site that provides binaries for the 4.3.x version.
I think that Matlab gurus should provide suitable binaries for modern OSX versions (more or less the same activity made by ATT people r.research.att.com/) in order to make simple to build fortran mex-files under OSX.
A better choice could be the possibility of supporting recent compilers, since it is easier to obtain binaries for these versions.
Does anybody have the same problem? How do you solved it?
Best regards Fabio
