Running my matlab function in python

For my current project, I need to run a matlab function in order to process an image. I want to do the rest of the process, however in python, and I have already written a python framework that would be able to handle the output of my matlab function. My problem is that I have tried a variety of different matlab-python connectors(pymatlab, pymatbridge, and matlabs own engine) but none of them seem to be doing the trick. What is the best way for me to call a matlab function in a python script?

Please explain your opinion: "none of them seem to be doing the trick". Post some code and explain the problems. Suggestion an improvement is much easier than guessing, what you exactly need.
