Trouble finding text in cellarrays that are class "cell"

I have lists of text in a cell array. If I type class(cellarray(1)) the output is 'cell'. I'm trying to find specific text in this array and am having to use long cellfun code to do so. char(cellarray), cellstr(cellarray) and strcmp(cellarray), don't work (Error is "Cell elements must be character arrays.".

Note the curly braces.
