Automatic Seed Selection in Region Growing

Hello,

I am working on Lung DICOM Images. I want to apply fully automated region-growing algorithm on these images to extract the whole chest from the image and lungs from the whole chest. Every time i need to give manually initial seeds. Can anyone help about automatic seed point selection. I read different papers but all in vain. Thanks !

A possible reason why there is no answer: this is a very difficult segmentation problem, for which there may not even be a general solution. If you have some constraints on your data, there may be a solution, but then you should post those here.
