How to read images of 10 bit each from Noaa satellite HRPT.dat file

Acually i would to like to work on NOAA satellite data.The receiver is given the .dat file directly,using ERDAS i can separate the bands but using matlab I cant do the same.So anyone please suggest me to solve this problem. Thanking you
