how to select a spreadsheet cell from one column only

I need the syntax for freely selecting a single cell that is in Column A always. The cell is a single number like 540.

for example
disp('please select the ID number first')
[num0,text0,both0] = xlsread('h&vlookup_if_and_or_Capacity_Planning.xlsx',-1);
this interactively lets me pick the cell I want but doesn't limit me to choose from a single column, say I make a mistake and choose another column or another cell.

Not a Matlab feature; pilot error is another problem.
Not expert enough to know if can protect a cell from being selected/read in Excel or not but it's an Excel, not a Matlab question. You could arbitrarily read column 'A:' from the spreadsheet and present only those results from which to choose instead of opening the spreadsheet itself. That would at least limit the damage.
