How to get start with food recognition using neuron network?

Hi everyone, I need to implement a Matlab code for food recognition system from photos. I believe i need to recognize the colors with other features to reach a final decision. I tried to implement this idea using trainCascadeObjectDetector but i could not reach good results since i couldn't get more pictures. i reaches 500+ positive images. I need to implement this idea using neuron network but i don't know which NN suits this project and how to extract the features. and also, what are those features besides the color. any help will be much appreciated!
