Can figures or menues open up without app designer's objects placed on the canvas?

I have a question regrding matlab app designer; do I really have to have all my figures coming from function inside my program that I want to convert into an app, on a UIAx axes or are they going to open up though I dont place any object on the canvas..?

Your figures will open up outside the app canvas - and if you're wondering, they will also generate outside the app's canvas without issue when you deploy it as a standalone application.
