Why do I get the error "Git internal error (Code = -1, Class = 2)"?

I am receiving the following error when I try to push to a Git repository from the MATLAB Project interface. How can I resolve it?

Git internal error (Code = -1, Class = 2): failed to write chunk header: The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response

This error comes from the third-party Git library, "libgit2", that MATLAB uses.

To avoid this error:

1. make sure that Git is installed and configured correctly in your system
2. push the "commit" using a system call from the MATLAB Command Window as follows:\n

   >> ! git push
