Passing a MATLAB figure handle to a MEX file

Hi everbody!
Is it possible to pass a MATLAB figure handle like here
h=figure();
to a MEX file. Or can such a handle only be used in "real" MATLAB? (I don't know how to express it better) I'm trying to pass the handle in the MEX file to this C function:
INT is_RenderBitmap (HIDS hCam, INT nMemID, HWND hwnd, INT nMode)
It needs a window handle as output destination for the image memory. I'm not sure if this will work at all but - if possible - I want to avoid using a window in "pure" C/C++. I already tried a lot but so far wasn't able to get it running.
Does anybody have any ideas, suggestions, examples?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Wolfgang
